How to Care for Your Succulent – A Little Gift From the Wedding

This little plant was part of a wedding celebration and is yours to take home and enjoy. With a little light and occasional watering, your succulent can thrive for years to come.

Succulents are wonderfully low-maintenance plants that store water in their leaves, which means they don’t need much attention — perfect for beginners.

Here’s everything you need to know.

☀️ Light

Succulents love bright light.

Place your plant somewhere with lots of natural light, such as:

☀️a sunny windowsill

☀️a bright kitchen or living room

☀️near a south or west facing window

If the plant doesn’t get enough light, it may start to stretch or grow tall and thin as it reaches towards the sun.

A few hours of sunlight each day will keep it happy.

💧 Water

Succulents prefer a “soak and dry” watering style.

This means:

💧Water the soil when it is completely dry

💧Give it a small drink until the soil is slightly damp

💧Allow it to dry out again before watering

💧In most homes this usually means watering every 2–3 weeks, but it can vary depending on light and temperature.

Top tips:

💧Always water the soil, not the leaves

💧Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water

💧It’s better to underwater than overwater

💧If the leaves become soft or mushy, the plant may be getting too much water.

🌱Feeding

🌱 Feeding

If you’d like to encourage a little extra growth, you can use a houseplant fertiliser once or twice during spring and summer.

Avoid feeding during autumn and winter when the plant naturally grows more slowly.

🪴 Repotting

Your succulent is currently in a 5cm nursery pot, which is perfect for now.

You may want to repot it when:

🪴the plant outgrows the pot

🪴roots start appearing underneath

🪴or after about 6–12 months

When repotting:

🪴Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes

🪴Use well-draining soil, ideally cactus or succulent compost

🪴Gently remove the plant from its pot

🪴Place it in the new pot and lightly fill around it with soil

🪴Wait a few days before watering to let the roots settle

🌿 If Your Succulent Grows “Babies”

Many succulents produce small offshoots or “babies” around the base of the plant.

You can either:

🌿Leave them attached to create a fuller plant
or

🌿Gently remove and pot them separately to grow a brand new plant

To separate them:

🌿Carefully remove the plant from the pot

🌿Gently twist or cut the baby away from the parent plant

🌿Let the baby sit for a day or two so the cut can dry

🌿Plant it in its own small pot with succulent soil

🌿Before long, you’ll have another little plant to enjoy.
